Radiant Infosystems and Jinfonet Create Solution
that Allows Bus Riders in the Indian State of
Karnataka to Purchase Tickets Electronically for
the First Time
December 7, 2007
– Jinfonet, the leader in embedded reporting
solutions for Java applications, and Radiant Infosystems,
a leading information technology consulting, development
and training company, announced today that the
companies have partnered to offer an online public
transportation ticketing service for the first
time ever in Karnataka, India. In fact, the new
solution will be the first online public road
transportation ticketing service in the country.
Radiant Infosystems, in collaboration with IBM
and Bharat Electronics Ltd., has implemented a
Web-based ticketing portal application that enables
commuters to inquire about bus routes, view bus
schedules and book advance travel tickets off
the Internet from anywhere to anywhere in South
India. AWATAR, the ‘Anywhere Anytime Advanced
Reservation' system, aims to bring more convenience
and value-added services to the brick-and-mortar
ticket reservation facilities offered by the state's
road transport department to its customers. Previously
customers had to book tickets at Karnataka State
Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) outlets
or its authorized franchisees only, which were
linked by point-to-point connection. This often
resulted in delays and inconsistent service levels
to customers.
In addition to providing convenience to bus riders,
the KSRTC provides better visibility into the
number of riders on its many routes. By including
Jinfonet's JReport offering in the solution Radiant
Infosystems has built, the state will be able
to run reports about online reservations for 4,000
buses used by 2.2 million passengers on a daily
basis.
In order to provide the appropriate reporting
solution for the ticketing system, Radiant Infosystems
replaced Crystal Reports with JReport. JReport
is built with a 100 percent Java architecture,
which makes it easy to embed directly into the
Radiant Infosystems application. JReport facilitates
online printing of "trip sheets" that
contain and store all information pertaining to
the bus routes. These sheets include detailed
information about the route such as date of the
journey, the drivers' names, bus numbers, time
of departure, origin and destination, and the
number of passengers. This allows KSRTC to better
plan routes to effectively support its riders.
JReport's dynamic HTML (DHTML) functionality
allows Radiant Infosystems to produce these detailed
reports and graphs for planning on a daily, hourly
or minute-by-minute basis. JReport enables easy
access to operational data from disparate data
sources in real time, facilitating faster and
better decision-making process.
"JReport is the reporting tool of choice
as it provides us with critical data regarding
bus routes via the web with self-service reporting
and printing," said Abi .V. John, head of
business development for Radiant Infosystems.
"The State of Karnataka will be able to
better plan and adjust bus routes and frequencies
based upon the information the reports will
provide. This new system will be a major step
towards helping Karnataka achieve better efficiencies
in its public transportation system."
As a sign of the importance of this new system
for India, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shree
H.D. Kumaraswamy, was present for the launch
of the AWATAR travel reservation system on April
29, 2006. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Narayanacharulu,
Director, Radiant Infosystems said,
"The AnyWhere AnyTme Advanced Reservation
system virtualizes the services of the KSRTC
by enabling passengers to experience a whole
range of travel and ticketing services at their
doorstep. All that is needed is an Internet
connection for a user to experience a truly
world-class travel reservation solution. Now
that the system has been implemented successfully
in Karnataka, Radiant Infosystems will proceed
with similar projects in other states."
"This is an exciting time for us to be a
part of Radiant Infosystems' grand plan of providing
online bus ticketing services," said Fred
Richards, vice president for Jinfonet. "Together
we're creating history as we plan to extend similar
services to other states in India."
JReport provides the scalability to print hundreds
of reports in a variety of enterprise business
formats, including email, Excel, PDF, RTF and
PostScript.
